 | A simple statement . . . . "It is our stated policy to be sensitive to the environment we live and work in. We can confirm that our spice suppliers embrace the princiles of Fair Trade and are increasing the number of programmes they have in place. In the meantime we can happily report that no child labour has been, or will ever be used in the sourcing and production of our raw ingredients. The Cardboard used in packaging is sourced from sustainable european forests and all cartons and printing is done in the UK rather than China to reduce the air miles involved in the products." | | Long term supplier relationships Our spices are sourced for us by a family owned company who have been importing spices for over 100 years. Over that time they have built up long standing relationships with growers, understanding that a succesful relationship is a two way thing - make sure that growers recieve good prices and are treated properly and they will respond by providing top quality spices. Our major spice supplier has confirmed in writing that no child labour has been, or will ever be used in the sourcing and production of our raw ingredients. | Fair Trade We consider 'Fair Trade' to be very important - for example an agreement is in place with a partner in Papua New Guinea that pays a price for vanilla beans higher than the current market value. This extra contribution is used to build a school within the community to not only teach local farmers about the vanilla, but also focusing on health, safety and hygiene, enabling them to deliver a consistent, better quality product. Further 'Fair Trade' agreements with a partner in Ambon, Indonesia are being made with the acquisition of land and the construction of processing facilities and warehousing that all comply with Dutch health, safety and hygiene regulations. Contracts are currently being set-up for local farmers, ensuring a higher price is paid, a high quality product is being delivered and new employment is created, which in turn helps support the local community. | | | Quality Ingredients The ingredients are clearly at the heart of any good food product. We care. What we don't do is simply shop around for the cheapest offer - for example the white pepper corn used in some dishes are know as Diamond Whites- if you look at them they are all uniformly white and have a subtlety of taste which means you can eat them whole. Cheaper sources of white pepper will have a range of colours and will not have the consistancy of taste - it's blended vs malt whisky. |
